Students Take Prizes in 2016 Chicago Award in Architecture Competition
The competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Chicago Chapter, is juried by members of the AIA Chicago Foundation. The awards will be formally presented at AIA Chicago’s annual meeting in early December.
According to AIA Chicago, 30 projects from six schools were considered: Illinois Institute of Technology, the School of the Art Institute, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and Washington University in St. Louis.
Taking second place were Wanwan Shao, Widya Ramadhani, and Yuxuan Wang for their entry Noida Medical Center: Hospital That Responds to the Living Pattern of India. Shao, Ramadhani, and Wang developed their entry in Clinical Associate Professor William Worn’s spring 2016 graduate design studio. Shao, Ramadhani, and Wang previously placed second in the school’s spring 2016 Graduate Studio Design Excellence Awards competition.
Claiming third place was Liyuan Ge for Purimemorial, a project developed in Associate Professor Erik Hemingway’s fall 2015 graduate design studio. Ge previously placed second in the school’s fall 2015 Graduate Studio Design Excellence Awards competition.
Honorable Mention went to Rakan Ayyoub, Brian Cruse, and John Harmon for 320 East North Water Street—Vertical City in Chicago’s Streeterville District, which they completed in Associate Professor Emeritus Paul Armstrong’s fall 2015 graduate design studio. Ayyoub, Cruse, and Harmon previously placed first in the school’s fall 2015 Graduate Studio Design Excellence Awards competition.
This year’s success builds on last year’s second place finish by graduate students Joshua Chen and Jienan Zhang. They were recognized for their Riyadh General Hospital entry, which they developed in Professor Worn’s spring 2015 graduate design studio.
