Lynne Dearborn Interviewed for AIAS #Askanarchitect Video
AIAS Executive Director Nick Serfass interviewed Dearborn at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture administrators’ meeting in Chicago last fall.
Dearborn talks with Serfass about the academic, professional, and personal pathways that led to her joining the Illinois School of Architecture faculty in 2002. These avenues wind from Maine to New York to Fiji—where Dearborn served in the Peace Corps—and on to Oregon, Wisconsin, and, finally, Illinois. She explains how these pathways led to her deep interest in working with populations that have been historically underserved by architects. She also discusses her recent research and teaching at the intersection of design and health, which grows out of her founding leadership of the school’s Health and Well-being program area and her coordination of the interdisciplinary faculty team that is affiliated with the AIA Design and Health Research Consortium.
Prospective architecture students will enjoy Dearborn’s comments on why she became an architect and a professor of architecture and what she thinks today’s students should learn about designing with health in mind. (For a glimpse of what Dearborn is teaching, see this video about design of healthcare provider environments produced by Kelsi Stephens, an M.Arch student in Dearborn’s fall 2016 graduate seminar on health and the built environment.)
Keep watching to the end of the #Askanarchitect video to see how Dearborn triumphs in Serfass’s “60 Seconds of Awesome” rapid-fire question-and-answer challenge.
