What is the difference between a Program Area and a Concentration?

The School of Architecture curriculum and faculty research are organized into five Program Areas, providing students with an opportunity to learn about architecture at different scales with diverse methods and technologies. As a graduate student, you are not required to study under just one Program Area but can use them as subject-matter guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Concentration is a guided program of study, that requires specific coursework to earn. The M.Arch degree has six Concentrations: Building Performance, Design of Tall Buildings, Detail and Fabrication, Health and Wellbeing, Urbanism, and History + Theory + Preservation. The MSAS degree has one Concentration: Structures. When a Concentration is completed as part of the degree program, it will show up on the final transcript, but not the diploma.

You can find information about financial aid on this webpage.

Aid for graduate students is offered in the form of assistantships and fellowships. Materials submitted at the time of application to a School of Architecture graduate program serve as an application for all available fellowships. Applicants and students are awarded fellowships on the basis of merit.

Teaching assistantships are applied for each Spring upon the receipt of admission applications. Assistantships are awarded to about 1/8th of our graduate student population.

If you are an admitted or current student and the School of Architecture was unable to offer you an assistantship directly, you are welcome to explore the Assistantship Clearinghouse to see openings from across campus you may be qualified for.

You can find the Leave of Absence policy in the Graduate College Handbook, and please meet with an advisor for assistance. A Leave of Absence must be requested prior to the first day of classes – if it’s after the first day of classes, an advisor can assist with available options depending on your situation.
