Heather Grossman Speaks at Conference
Her talk, “Medieval Monuments and Modern Nations in the Mediterranean,” examined the use of medieval and early modern Mediterranean architecture and its forms in 19th-century Ottoman Turkey, juxtaposed with current building projects of the current Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. As part of a larger book project, she is exploring the reception of historical architecture in past and present nation-building and nationalism in the Mediterranean. The interdisciplinary conference, which saw papers from over 120 international scholars, was organized by John Cabot University and the École Française de Rome.
