About Sara Bartumeus Ferré
Biography
Sara Bartumeus is an Architect and Landscape Architect by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and Professor in Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She holds affiliations with Landscape Architecture, The Center for the Study of Global Gender Equity, the European Union Center (UIUC), and MBLandArch (UPC). She has taught and served at both public Architecture Schools in Barcelona, the City of Barcelona Architecture Quality Committee, the Catalan Architects Association Planning and Landscape Advisory Committee, and as co-organizer of eight International Biennials of Landscape Architecture.
As co-founder of Renau Bartumeus, her work on social housing, community facilities, public space, and exhibitions has been published, exhibited, and recognized with national and international awards. These include: First Prizes in the 16 Collserola Gateways (Tibidabo), Can Xarau Park, and Young Architects Housing Competition (186 Social Housing in Poblenou); AJAC V First Prize and AJAC I Accessit; a FAD’11 selection (Liquid China exhibition); finalist at the 1st Biennial of Architecture of Vallès (Ripollet Health Center); and First mentions in Europan7, and Europan4. More recent recognitions as principal researcher of a multidisciplinary team and as an academic include the 2021 AADIPA European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention-Planning Category (Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample Urban Landscape Study); and the 2021 ACSA Diversity Achievement Honorable Mention (Illinois Women’s Reunion+Symposiu+Exhibition) and the 2021 FAA Teaching Excellence Award.
Bartumeus’ transdisciplinary research, founded in her early career as a researcher for the Barcelona Laboratory of Urbanism, critically interrogates the nature, role, and production of collective-public space through urban ecology, social claims, and collective memory. Recently, she has developed and implemented a methodology to identify, map, and preserve urban landscapes’ tangible and intangible heritage.
