Computing Policies

Architecture Computing Policies

Network Account Policies
Access to computing resources in the Illinois School of Architecture is controlled through the use of Windows user accounts. These accounts are maintained by CITES for every student, staff, and faculty member in the university.

File Storage Policies

File Storage
Architecture no longer maintains a file server for students personal files. Instead, we utilize U of I Box (https://uofi.app.box.com/login) which provides 50GB free to registered students.

File Privacy
Although the files in your home directory are not viewable by other Architecture students, the administrators of the school's network have access to all files on the server. From time to time the administrators scan the server for dubious files (.mp3 files, for example), and reserve the right to modify the contents of anybody's home directory.

Semesterly Purge of Files

During winter and summer breaks, the contents of the Illinois School of Architecture's computers are purged of all files. Students are responsbile

Computer Lab Policies (314 Architecture & 100 Art Annex)
Access
The lab is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for Architecture students while school is in session, and usually during breaks as well, though we reserve the right to limit access during breaks to facilitate maintenance of the lab. Access is controlled by an electronic lock that is opened by your i-Card. Each year we obtain a list of Architecture students from Admissions and Records and use those numbers to program the lock. Invariably some students are missed: if your i-Card will not open the lock, please email Spring Harrison (sharriso@illinois.edu) your i-Card number to be added to the lock database.

Files Saved in the Lab
Please do not save any of your own files to the hard drive of any lab machine. Lab machines are subject to rebuilding without warning at any time, which means that the hard drive is completely erased, along with any user files that had been saved on it.

Rendering
For projects to be rendered on lab machines, students may use any station in the computer lab any time (with the exception of during scheduled classes). Students are limited to the use of one computer each while rendering. If more than one station is rendering per person or if a station is rendering during a scheduled class, it will be stopped.

Scheduling for Class Use
Faculty may schedule the School's computer lab no less than two weeks prior to the event. To schedule for class use, email arch-printing@illinois.edu. Once the lab is scheduled in this manner, it will no longer be available to others during that time. After a time is agreed upon, signs will be posted to notify others of the scheduled use of the lab.

Printing Policies

How to Print
For information on how to print with PaperCut, visit FAA-Tech Services website for help. (https://answers.uillinois.edu/page.php?id=63819).

Printing Costs
The Illinois School of Architecture uses a printer management software called PaperCut (https://ss-papercut-pm1.atlas.illinois.edu:9192/user) to track and charge for prints sent to the School's printers and plotters. After you have released a print, your PaperCut account is charged. From there, it is billed to your university student billing account for you to pay. In the event that a systematic problem causes your print job to fail, you can send an email to arch-printing@illinois.edu.

Print System Outages
In addition, there may be some cases were the system fails to charge you for printing, due to an outage, server error, or other problem. In such a situation, you are still responsible for the cost of your printing and should report the problem immediately to the network support team. You will be charged when the system comes back online or the error is discovered.

Print Priority
Any person caught raising the priority of their print jobs in the queue will receive a warning. Upon the second offense, the offender will be denied printing privileges for a period of not less than two weeks. This period may be extended at the discretion of the school's Network Administrators or those whom they designate. Lab Technicians reserve the right to cancel plots for any reason they deem necessary, including excessive print time or large file size.

Bringing Personal Computers

You are welcome to bring in your own machine if you would like to use it in your studio. To gain access to the campus network, you must first submit the MAC Address Registration. Please note that the Illinois School of Architecture is in no way responsible for the physical safety of your machine. It is recommended that you do not leave your machine unsupervised. If you do have to leave studio, your machine should be physically secured to your workspace. In addition, by bringing your machine into studio you give the school's network administrators the right to access your machine to troubleshoot problems or investigate possible abuse of the network.

To print to Illinois School of Architecture printers from your personal computer, you must have access to the campus network by following the instructions above. After you have completed this step, follow the directions listed at FAQ's #13 below.

We strongly urge you to only use legal copies of software on your personal machine. The school provides licensed versions of major software products on all lab machines. Educational versions of most products are available at a reduced cost through the University of Illinois Software Webstore or Illini Flash Drive located in the Illini Union. Free one-year educational versions of Autodesk products can be download at Autodesk's Student Community website. If you are interested in us providing a product on lab machines that we do not currently offer, contact arch-computing@illinois.edu or the Computer Strategies Committee. Illegal "cracked" versions of software can harbor viruses or otherwise damage your computer's operating system.

Equipment Checkout Policies

Students and Faculty may schedule equipment maintained by the School’s computing staff for their use any time that the equipment is available. Once equipment is scheduled via the Architecture Resource Scheduler, it is no longer available to others during that reservation period. Faculty and students may schedule any equipment available to them through the designated web page maintained by the School’s computing staff (https://apps.atlas.illinois.edu/Arch_Resource_Scheduler).

Equipment previously scheduled as indicated above shall be picked up from TBH 20 Computer Lab. Following are the hours: Monday-Thursday 9am-10pm, Friday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-10pm.

Equipment must be returned to TBH 20 on time. Anyone not returning checked out equipment by the end of their reservation period will be assessed a late fee of $5 per hour late. Any late fees will be charged directly to your University account. Continuing of late equipment returns will result in the loss of equipment check out privileges.

Electronic Door Lock Access

There are a number of doors throughout the school which students open using their i-Cards. These doors are all running on a centralized system that updates the locks. Invariably some students are missed: if your i-Card will not open the lock, please email Spring Harrison (sharriso@illinois.edu) your i-Card number to be added to the lock database.

Computing FAQ's

COMPUTING FAQ's

What are the school's computing resources for students?
The main resources for students are the computers and printers in Labs 20 TBH, 314 Architecture Building, and 100 Art Annex, and the printers in select studios. In addition to these fixed resources, there are a number of items that are available for loan to students. For more detailed information regarding resources, visit our Labs and Printing sites or visit our Equipment Checkout site.

What are the school's laptop recommendations for incoming students?
Please review our recommendations before purchasing your personal laptop (Laptop Guide), and our technical specifications (Laptop Technical Specs).
PC vs Mac document.

What's with all these passwords?
At the Illinois School of Architecture, we use the AD (Active Directory) password. This can be reset at http://go.illinois.edu/password. In order to change your AD password, you will need to know your NetID password. If you do not know what your NetID password is, you must go to room 1211 of the Digital Computer Laboratory (1304 W. Springfield, across from the Grainger Engineering Library) to reset it. To use this password in the lab or studios, make sure that you have "University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign" selected in the "Log in to" field of the Windows login box.

How much stuff can I store on the student file server?
Architecture no longer maintains a file server for students personal files. Instead, we utilize U of I Box (https://uofi.app.box.com/login) which provides 50GB free to registered students.

How do I report computer problems?
Report all problems with studio and lab machines by informing the lab tech (when on duty), or by emailing arch-printing@illinois.edu, Please be as specific as possible when describing the problem, and be sure to mention the name of the computer and which room it is in.

My i-Card won't open a lock. To whom should I go for help?
Please email your i-Card number to Spring Harrison (sharriso@illinois.edu).

How do I check out items like digital cameras, laptops, or projectors?
Before you can check out equipment, you must first reserve it through the Architecture Resource Scheduler, which is located on the web at https://apps.atlas.illinois.edu/Arch_Resource_Scheduler. Once you have reserved the equipment, you may pick it up from room 20 Temple Buell Hall at the appropriate time.

How can I tell what my current printing balance is?
In the lower right-hand side of the screen on lab and studio machines is a small PaperCut icon. When opened, it will display the balance of your account. More than likely, it will be in parenthesis, meaning you have a negative balance, and you have to pay this off when it is charged to your student billing account at the end of the billing period.

How can I bring in my computer from home and put it on the network in my studio?
You are welcome to bring in your personal machine and install it in your studio. If you have an Ethernet card, your machine can also be placed on the network so that you may access the various network services that the school and the university provide. To have network privileges for a personally-owned machine, you must submit the MAC Address Registration. You will receive an email confirmation that your computer has been assigned an IP address and will now function on the network. Your computer must be set to automatically receive security patches and have up-to-date anti-virus software installed.

How can I print from my personal computer that I brought into studio?
For information on how to print with PaperCut, visit FAA-Tech Services website for help. (https://answers.uillinois.edu/page.php?id=63819).

How do I access my server space from home (non-Architecture locations)?
You must use the VPN software available from CITES (for free) to do this. Instructions are available at: RemoteAccess.pdf
