Lake Flato: Innovation & Craft
Lecture Abstract:
For over 40 years, the work of Lake Flato architects has advanced authentic place-based modern architecture that enhances human experience and connects clients and the public to the natural environment. High-performance integrated design serves as a foundation for architecture that advances sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Andrew Herdeg’s lecture will explore the intersection of innovative structural systems and traditional notions of craft. 3-D printed concrete, mass timber and rammed earth present significant design opportunities and technical challenges around constructability, material qualities, textures, cost and systems integration. When implemented thoughtfully and strategically, these systems celebrate authenticity, enhance user experiences, create warm welcoming spaces, reinforce place and connect users to their environmental context.
