Carles Marcos , Lecturer in Architectural Design courses at the Barcelona Program since 2017, was awarded –ex-— the 2018 Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Prize by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC-).
The UPC 2018 Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award is awarded to those who have obtained a PhD in any doctoral program of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia with a qualification of ‘cum laude’ in the academic year 2015-2016.
Carles Marcos’ dissertation was entitled “ de la . Barcelona com a ” (Architecture of the corner. Barcelona, as a case study) and was co-directed by Xavier and Roger Sauquet.
The thesis is based on the analysis of the treatment given to the urban corner overtime. The first part of the research brings together a set of observations focused on the architectural idea of the corner. The second and third parts offer a critical approach to sixty-five corner buildings located in Barcelona. These case studies are explored from the broad spectrum of the idea, allowing to re-interpret them and to verify the importance of this topic in different areas of architecture, as well as to ratify, from the local cases, the universality of the urban corner as an architecturally significant notion.
