Visiting Lecturer David Emmons recently collaborated with a former U of I exchange student, Claire Gaspin, on a competition entry titled "Babel: Settlement no. 1" which was awarded Honorable Mention in the 24Hr: Mars Competition sponsored by Ideas Forward. The competition's premise was to envision a settlement on the planet of Mars with scientific research purposes that would be co-financed by space tourism. The competition was the 13th edition of the "24Hr" series and received numerous entries from across the globe. Their proposal "Babel: Settlement no. 1" is expressed as a large-scale ant farm that reveals itself in section similar to the Pyramids of Giza. The proposed capsules use the planet's rocky volcanic basalt as a building material which reduces radiation and provides a natural insulator.
