Design Brief

The site for MakeSeries2 is the North Gallery in the Architecture Annex.  The boundaries of the gallery are outlined to be a rectangle defined as the 3 existing walls with the southern boundary to be 20 feet from the north wall.  Students are asked to create an installation that will A) Define and separate the gallery from the work spaces, and B) give an additional function to the space.  This additional function is left for each submitting team to conceptualize.  Designs should not inhibit the use of the space as a gallery nor require maintenance other than routine cleaning that the gallery already receives.  Designs should, however, create a consistent aesthetic throughout the entire gallery.  A plan and photos of the site will be made available for registered teams to use with their submissions.

Charrette/Critique Day

On Saturday, November 14th, competing teams are invited to join with members of the faculty to receive feedback on their preliminary designs.  The charrette this year is being held earlier so that teams can receive feedback on the concepts of their designs.  A list of participating faculty will be available closer to the event.  Lunch, snacks, and other refreshments will be provided for entered teams.  Teams wishing to attend must inform us before registration closes at 6 pm on November 9th.

The MakeSeries 2 jury will consist of five members of the faculty and two students of the school.  Faculty members are as follows: returning judge Professor Jeffery Poss, and new judges Professors Scott Murray, Marci Uihlein, Fang Xu, and Andrea Melgarejo de Berry.  The two student judges, one from each degree program, will be announced after registration closes.

Awards and Funding

$200 will be awarded to each of the 3 finalists teams.  Two of these teams will be selected by the jury, while the third will be selected by student vote.  All three finalist teams will continue to revise their designs and an overall winner will be selected by the same jury.

The overall winner, after both rounds of judging, will be allocated $1,500 for the construction of their design.  This money will be controlled by the school through a separate account, with the winning team working alongside the MakeSeries coordinators and ISoA faculty/staff to purchase construction materials.

Teams and Registration

Students entering the competition are limited to 4 persons per team.  At least 1 student per team must be an Illinois School of Architecture student; the other members may come from any school within the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Students wishing to enter as individuals are allowed to do so.

There is an entry fee of $20 per team.  If a team consists of 3 or more different class levels, then the fee will be waived.  (Ex. A team consisting of 1 freshman, 1 junior, and 1 grad student will not be required to pay the $20.)  All fees collected will be used for the Charrette/Critique Day and the Exhibit Reception.

Students wishing to enter may do so via an online form linked on our Facebook page or in person on Monday, November 9th from 5-6 pm in the TBH Atrium.  Teams must decide at the time of registration whether they will be attending the Charrette/Critique Day on Saturday, November 14th.  Teams registering online need to email and set up a time to pay before 6 pm on November 9th.  Teams that wish to register after November 9 may still do so, but they will be charged an additional $5 and will not be able to attend the Charrette/Critique Day.  This additional fee will be required even if a team qualifies for the previously mentioned waiver.
