Illinois School of Architecture students Sang Oh Jo, Junga Hong, and Do Yoon Kim were recently named as runners-up for their team entry to the perFORM 2015 Design Competition, which challenged entrants to design a new net-zero energy, mixed-use, multifamily building in Portland, Oregon. With the competition open to architecture students and interns based in the US and Canada, the Illinois team's proposal was one of only three projects selected for awards (a first place and two runner-up winners). This recognition comes with a $1,500 monetary award.

Visiting Lecturer David Emmons recently collaborated with a former U of I exchange student, Claire Gaspin, on a competition entry entitled "Moonboxes: A Lunar Safari" which was awarded 3rd Place in the 24Hr: Moon Competition sponsored by Ideas Forward. The competition's premise was to envision a settlement on the moon with scientific research purposes that would be co-financed by space tourism. The competition was the 7th edition of the "24Hr" series and received several entries from across the globe.
Third place was awarded to "Riyadh General Hospital," a proposal from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign students Joshua Chen and Jienan Zhang. "A sophisticated solution that grapples with religion and gender issues," was how a juror characterized the plan to bring a new hospital typology to Saudi Arabia's capital city.

Visiting Lecturer David Emmons recently collaborated with two graduate students, Anthony Dombrowski (M.Arch '15) and Yang Yu (M.Arch '16), on a competition entry entitled "Beyond the Clouds" which was awarded a top-10 Honorable Mention in the Astronomy Center Redsand Competition sponsored by reTH!NKing Competitions. The competition's premise was to rethink the current nature of the Red Sand Sea Forts - structures built in the Thames and Mersey estuaries during the Second World War, approximately 8 miles from the nearest British coast.
Earl Prize / Graduate Studio Design Excellence - Spring 2015
The Illinois School of Architecture is pleased to announce the winners of the Earl Prizes in Design (undergraduate) and the Graduate Awards for Design Excellence (graduate) for the Spring 2015 Semester. These awards recognize the outstanding student work completed in design studio courses at all levels of the curriculum.
The University Library announced the arrival of Melanie Emerson as the new Head Librarian of the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art.

The Illinois School of Architecture is pleased to announce that Brian Vitale, BSAS 1993, will serve as the speaker at this year’s Convocation Ceremony on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Brian is an award-winning Design Director and Principal for the Chicago office of Gensler, one of the world’s most influential design firms. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1993) and a Master of Architecture degree with honors from Washington University in St. Louis (1995).
